On our road trip through Puglia we experienced the most by staying in different towns almost every other day. This way we visited charming historic towns, pristine beaches, the beautiful countryside, and met friendly locals who made us feel right at home all in one trip.

That said, we will give you an idea of where to stay in Puglia for any type of traveler. By the end, we hope you know what to expect in each town so you can decide which one matches your travel expectations and interests.

With so much to see and do at every turn, we experienced this part of Italy as the perfect road trip destination. Rather than staying in just one place, we explored as many different towns as possible to get the full experience during our Puglia trip.

While each town offers something for any traveler, the following list focuses on particular travelers seeking a specific destination that fits their travel expectations.

1. Polignano a Mare – Where To Stay In Puglia for the First Time

If this is your first time in Puglia, you want to stay somewhere that has a little bit of everything: historic towns, beautiful beaches, and lots of day trip options. Look no further than Polignano a Mare or alternatively Monopoli.

Polignano a Mare

This beautiful cliffside town is a perfect introduction to Puglia. It’s known for its charming narrow streets lined with white stone houses in the centro storico (historical center) and offers the best panoramic views over the Adriatic Sea.

The iconic Lama Monachile beach is the main attraction. However, several other gorgeous beaches nearby can be easily explored.

Over the years, Polignano a Mare has grown in popularity. Today there are a lot of incredible eateries. Make sure you try the orecchiette pasta and other traditional dishes.

Pros

• Stunning sea views and scenic cliffside walks
• Tasty local cuisine
• Easy access to day trips along the coast

Cons

• Popular with tourists, so very busy during the peak season
• Limited beach access as the town is mainly set on cliffs.

Where to stay in Polignano a Mare for first-timers

There is a large choice of various accommodations in Polignano a Mare. You can go for the sea view at one of the places perched on cliffs, choose a cute place within the little streets, or stay outside town to be away from the crowd.

📍Budget Underground 22 offers an affordable place to stay, in a quiet part of town just a 10-minute walk from the town center. It is family-run, with the added convenience of free parking.

📍Mid-Range Il Simposio Suite-Housea Travel is located on a beautiful square. The apartment is just a short walk from restaurants, bars, and the beach. Its quiet yet central spot with easy parking offers a perfect base for exploring the town.

📍Luxury: Bianca Relax & SPA, a relaxing and luxurious retreat, with spacious, well-designed interiors and a fantastic jacuzzi. Its central location near the old town and stunning views make it the perfect getaway.

Beaches near Polignano a Mare

Besides the famous Lama Monachile beach, there are a couple of beaches worth visiting nearby. Don’t expect long-stretched sandy beaches here. These are cove beaches with little patches of sand that fill up quickly with beach lovers. But don’t worry, just follow the crowd and find a spot right on the cliffs.

To get there hop on a (electric) bike or go for a hike. These are the beaches that are within a 30-minute walk or a 10-minute bike ride:

• Spiaggia di Porto Cavallo, a tiny beach with a mix of soft sand and huge stones, is family-friendly.
• Spiaggia di Torre San Vito, the little pools of water between the rocks make this beach ideal for kids. The many coves are also ideal for relaxing
• Lido Cala Paura, a cove beach that fills up quickly, but the water is crystal clear and wonderful to swim in. Sunbed rental is cheap.
• Cala San Giovanni private beach club with sunbeds lined on the soft sanded beach.
• Cala Port’Alga is located just outside town, and many fishing boats are found here. It isn’t really a beach, but many find a spot right on the cliffs to relax

Day trips from Polignano a Mare

This area offers wonderful day trip opportunities. Highlights are all within an hour’s drive away. Day trips we highly suggest from Polignano a Mare are:

• Explore the old town of Monopoli
• Go on a boat trip along the coast of Polignano a Mare
• Visit Bari

• Drive through the stunning countryside to the villages in the iconic Valle d’Itria: Alberobello, Ostuni, Martina Franca, and Locorotondo.
• Be amazed about Matera (if you have more time, stay at least one night)
• Experience the caves of Grotte di Castellana

Alternative for first-timers: Monopoli

Monopoli is a wonderful alternative to Polignano a Mare, located just a 10-minute drive away. There might not be dramatic views here, but in Monopli you will have more space. It is less touristy than its nearby coastal town. Additionally, it has beautiful ancient churches and buildings, large gardens, and a medieval Charles V castle built in 1552.

The city center is charming, just like its waterfront at Porto Antigo. This is a wonderful spot to walk along the water and defensive walls.

The main beach in town is Cala Porta Vecchia, but there are a couple of nice beaches nearby too. Some are rocky, like many beaches in this part of Puglia. So make sure you bring water shoes. The beaches south of Monopoli tend to be more sandy.

Monopoli and Polignano a Mare are located close to one another. If you choose to stay in Monopoli you can do the exact day trips we mentioned for Polignano a Mare.

Pros

• Large historic center with more space for walking and exploration.
• Fantastic historical landmarks like ancient churches and a medieval castle.
• Local vibe, with fewer tourists than Polignano a Mare.

Cons

• Not as many luxury hotel options.
• Lacks the dramatic sea views found in Polignano a Mare

Where to stay in Monopoli for first-timers

📍Budget Grotta San Vito offers a charming stay, with a cozy room with sea view terrace. Just a short walk from the beach and local attractions. It’s the perfect spot to experience the charming old town. The added bonus is the delicious homemade food and the hospitality of Franca.

📍Mid-Range Il Vecchio e il Mare is a beautiful retreat located just steps from the main square, with easy access to shops, restaurants, and the sea. The private terrace and well-equipped room provide a quiet space to relax, making it an ideal base for exploring the old town. The only downside is the limited parking, but the central location more than makes up for it.

📍Luxury Dimora Sardaro Luxury Suites offers a chic stay with excellent attention to detail, from the sparkling wine to the relaxing jacuzzi. The central location is perfect for exploring the town and its beaches.

2. Polignano a Mare & Gallipoli – Where To Stay in Puglia as a Base

We explored Puglia by car, hopping from town to town. We can’t imagine sticking to one base as there is simply too much to discover.

But let’s be real, packing up and moving to a new accommodation every couple of days isn’t everyone’s idea of a relaxing holiday. So if we were to choose a base we would choose Polignano a Mare and Gallipoli.

Yes, they are two separate towns but both offer exactly the diverse experience that makes Puglia so attractive.

Polignano a Mare & Gallipoli

Besides being a charming coastal village with stunning views, Polignano a Mare is also a great place to stay as a base.

From here it’s easy to go on a day trip to Bari, Monopoli, and the Valle d’Itara – think of Ostuni, Alberobello, and Martina Franca.

If you have a couple of days more to spare head to Gallipoli along the Ionian Sea. The old town is set on an island connected to the mainland by a bridge.

Its central location on the Ionian coast makes it perfect for exploring nearby towns like Santa Maria di Lueca and Lecce. Another great thing about Gallipoli is that there is a long list of spectacular beaches nearby.

We visited a lot of the beaches nearby Gallipoli and particularly loved Spiaggia Padula Bianca and Punta Della Suina. But there are dozens of more gorgeous beaches along this part of Puglia, known as Salento. Make sure you check out Baia dei Diavoli and Spiaggia di Torre San Giovanni too.

Pros

• Polignano a Mare gives you easy access to popular inland villages, while Gallipoli lets you explore the best of Puglia’s coastline.
• Both locations are great for breaking up your trip so you experience different aspects of Puglia.

Cons

• Moving between two places means packing and unpacking, which may be inconvenient if you prefer a single accommodation.

Places to stay in Polignano a Mare as a base

📍Budget La Perla del Mare di Polignano Apartments offer a perfect base for exploring the charming streets, with a great location close to the old town, easy access to sights, and just 10 minutes from the station. The spacious apartment is well-equipped, with a lovely communal rooftop for relaxation, making it an ideal choice for a comfortable stay.

📍Mid-range Dimora Labbate offers a modern, stylish apartment with great amenities. Its central location, just a short walk from the historic center and train station, makes it the perfect base for exploring, with the added benefit of a responsive and helpful host, Claudia.

📍Luxury Da Riva Suite & Pool-Housea Travel is a modern designed retreat with a spacious terrace featuring a whirlpool, outdoor kitchen, and stunning sea views. The location is perfect, just a short walk to restaurants, shops, and the sea. The fantastic service from the friendly hosts will guarantee a wonderful stay.

Places to stay in Gallipoli as a base

📍Budget Room Milo offers a clean, comfortable stay with a fantastic location just a short walk from the old town, beaches, and local attractions. Daiana, the kind and welcoming host, ensures a pleasant experience, and the spacious room with a balcony adds an extra touch to your stay.

📍Mid-Range Terrazza Vista Mare e Box Auto offers an incredible rooftop terrace with stunning views and a spacious balcony ideal for relaxing. The apartment is perfectly located near the beach, with free parking and a helpful host who provides great recommendations.

📍Luxury Palazzo Salapolis – Luxury Apartments is a beautifully renovated historical building, offering a perfect blend of luxury and functionality with spacious, modern apartments. Located in the heart of the Old City, it’s a wonderful place to stay with a delicious breakfast, excellent amenities, and a welcoming host.

Alternative for a base: Martina Franca

If you really want to stick to one place as your base, then choose somewhere central—preferably in the Valle d’Itria.

Popular choices like Alberobello and Ostuni are great, but these towns attract a heavy tourist crowd throughout the day. So I recommend Martina Franca or a little town such as Cisternino or Ceglie Messapica.

For instance, Martina Franca is one of the main towns tucked away in the Valle d’Itria and is known for its lovely baroque architecture and charming vibe. It’s not on the coast but offers a more authentic experience of smaller towns in Puglia, surrounded by olive trees and beautiful countryside.

From here, it’s easy to go on day trips to nearby gems like Locorotondo or Ceglie Messapica.

Pros

• Less touristy than coastal towns, giving you a more authentic and peaceful experience.
• Central location, which makes it easy to explore other parts of the Itria Valley without long drives.

Cons

• No direct beach access, so you need to drive to the coast for a day at the beach.
• The city center can get quite busy during the day with day visitors.

Where to stay in Valle d’Itria as a base

For us, Puglia is the perfect destination for visiting beautiful villages in the countryside. Staying in a trulli house offers a unique experience. Luckily you don’t need to stay right in Alberobello. There are wonderful trulli accommodations in the surrounding villages that are not overrun by tourists.

📍Budget IL Plebiscito Luxury Loft Fronte Basilica in Martina Franca offers the best location right in the heart of the city, with stunning views of the church and main square. The modern apartment is beautifully restored, while the piazza below provides plenty of dining options and a charming atmosphere.

📍Mid-Range: Trulli Le Icone in Valle d’Itria in Ostuni offers a picturesque setting with spacious Trulli buildings, two sparkling clean pools, and a countryside atmosphere. The friendly staff, delicious breakfast in the garden, and convenient location for exploring the main attractions make it a perfect place for a relaxing getaway.

📍Luxury: Trulli del Carmine in Martina Franca offers a peaceful and authentic experience, with spacious grounds, a beautiful pool, and a charming Trulli accommodation. The exceptional hosts, Leonardo and Marina, go above and beyond with delicious homemade breakfasts, helpful tips, and warm hospitality, making it a memorable stay.

3. Bari – Where To Stay in Puglia Without a Car

Traveling without a car in Puglia involves a lot of planning and you have to let the idea go of visiting little villages and beaches. But that said, there are still a lot of beautiful places you can reach by public transportation.

You should not stick to one place to see most of Puglia without a car. Public transportation isn’t always the most efficient way to get around. It involves traveling a lot in one day to get to certain places. So instead, pack light and plan to hop around and stay in different towns.

But…

If you want a base and don’t have a car, go to Bari. From here, you can easily catch a train, or bus and go on day tours to nearby landmarks.

Bari

With an easy-to-navigate public transportation system, Bari is the best option for anyone planning to explore Puglia without a car. From here it’s simple to hop on a train or bus to many of Puglia’s best places.

In Bari you can wander through the Bari Vecchia (the charming historic center) with all its sights and smells—think orecchiette pasta made on the streets by local grandmas. Everything here is within easy walking distance, from the waterfront promenade to ancient churches.

From Bari you can easily catch a train to Polignano a Mare and Monopoli. On other days you can join an organized day trip to explore Itria Valley and visit villages such as Alberobello and Ostuni.

Pros

• Well connected via trains and buses to other parts of Puglia.
• Vibrant nightlife and lots of cultural activities.
• Plenty of accommodation choices from budget to luxury hotels.

Cons:

• Urban atmosphere may not suit those looking for a quieter countryside experience.
• Can be quite busy and noisy, especially in the city center.

Places to stay in Bari if you don’t have a car

📍Budget ROOM 110 BARI offers a prime location, just a short walk from the Old Town and Bari Centrale, making it ideal for exploring the city and nearby attractions. The cozy apartment provides great value, with a comfortable bed, a helpful host, and easy access to cafes, restaurants, and shops.

📍Mid-range: Palazzo Ietri Corso Vittorio Emanuele offers a spacious, beautifully decorated apartment (love the tiled floors) in a prime central location, just a short walk from the historic center and 15 minutes from the train station. The apartment has all the comforts you need, including a coffee/tea station, comfortable bed, and modern bathroom, making it a perfect base for exploring in and around Bari.

📍Luxury Donna Giacinta Blu Luxury Flat offers a stunning, modern apartment with luxurious finishes and a beautiful balcony overlooking Piazza Liberta. Its central location provides easy access to both the Old Town, Bari Centrale Station, and bus stops, making it a perfect base for Bari and day trips by public transportation.

Alternative for car-less travelers: Lecce

Lecce is also another great location if you don’t want to drive. We loved Lecce and can imagine visiting it for a weekend getaway.

Its historic center has beautiful narrow streets, stunning baroque architecture, ancient churches, and a lively atmosphere. Plus, Lecce’s local cuisine is a highlight you don’t want to miss: rustic bread, olive oil, and farm-fresh cheese – sounds delicious right?

Often called the ‘Florence of the South‘ for its architecture, Lecce is a very walkable city and is a great base for those who wish to travel by public transportation (bus or train). Its train station is just a 10-minute walk from the city center.

From Lecce, you can hop a 30-minute Flixbus ride to Brindisi, catch a train to Otranto – 2 hours, so it is a long trip – and Gallipoli which is 52 minutes by train. You do need to arrange a taxi, rent a scooter or a car for the day if you want to visit the gorgeous beaches nearby Lecce.

Pros

• Excellent public transportation options.
• Rich culture, beautiful architecture, and a very walkable city.
• Plenty of options for dining and entertainment.

Cons

• It can get crowded during summer, as it’s a major cultural hub.
• No direct beach access, though the coast is reachable by public transit (mostly from June until September only). Check the routes and timetables here.

Places to stay in Lecce without a car

📍Budget B&B La Dimora dei Professori provides a comfortable room with a large bed and great shower at an affordable price. The friendly owner serves a delicious Italian breakfast, and the location is perfect, just a short walk from the historic center and train station. A fantastic budget option.

📍Mid-range Il Garbino Suite and Apartment offers a stay right in the old town, a quiet location just minutes from restaurants, shops, historic sites, and train station. The apartment is beautifully furnished, with a full kitchen, large bedrooms, and a lovely terrace, while the helpful host, Alberto, ensures a welcoming experience.

📍Luxury Pollicastro Boutique Hotel offers a stunning blend of historic charm and modern design, with beautifully appointed rooms and unique artwork throughout. The hotel’s central location, tasty breakfast, and friendly staff make it the perfect place to experience the cultural heart of Lecce and nearby highlights.

4. Salento South Puglia – Where To Stay for Beaches

If you’re as passionate about stunning beaches with crystal-clear waters as we are, then you will find the West Salento region along the Ionian Sea pretty incredible.

Villages like Porto Cesareo, Torre Lapillo, and Punta Prosciutto offer pristine, sandy beaches and crystal-clear waters that are perfect for beach lovers. Each of these coastal gems has its charm, from family-friendly bays to quieter spots ideal for a peaceful escape.

For those who want to venture further south, Santa Maria di Leuca—located at the very tip of Italy’s heel—offers an unbeatable mix of seaside beauty and coastal adventures.

Nearby, Spiaggia di Pescoluse, often called the “Maldives of Salento,” has soft white sand and shallow turquoise waters. From Santa Maria di Leuca, you can also arrange boat trips to explore the dramatic sea cliffs and mysterious caves along the coastline.

Adriatic Coast

Heading up the Adriatic side, Otranto is surrounded by stunning beaches too. Our favorites include Baia dei Turchi, a long, sandy paradise with lush greenery, and Spiaggia Azzurra, which lives up to its name with incredibly blue waters.

If you prefer small, picturesque bays, Cala dell’Acquaviva and Mulino d’Acqua Beach are enchanting spots, though their waters can be rough depending on the time of year.

The list of beautiful beaches in the Salento area is endless. They are diverse – cliff, cove, and sandy beaches, and the water is just extremely clear and amazing. So you won’t go wrong when choosing a beach in this part of Italy.

Pros

• A wide variety of beach styles, from dramatic cliffs to soft sandy shores.
• Crystal-clear waters ideal for swimming.
• Plenty of charming coastal villages with dining and accommodation options (depending on the season).

Cons:

• Some beaches can become crowded during peak season.
• Limited public transportation means a car is essential for exploring multiple beaches.

Places to stay in the Salento area for gorgeous beaches

With so many beaches you don’t have to stay right at a specific beach. Instead, leave the coastal villages behind and go for the countryside. Some accommodations are just a 15-minute drive away from the stunning beaches.

📍Budget Villetta PEPE nel Salento in Salve offers a relaxing retreat in the countryside, surrounded by olive trees and just a short drive from the beaches. With spacious outdoor areas, family-friendly amenities, and a private entrance, it’s an ideal spot for a comfortable stay.

📍Mid-Range Terrazza e Conchiglie in Torre Suda offers a beautifully cared-for space with thoughtful touches, including fresh fruit and drinks upon arrival. The stunning panoramic terrace with a hot tub, along with a cozy, fully equipped apartment, makes it the perfect spot for a getaway with breathtaking sea views.

📍Mid-Range Le Antiche Dimore di Cadia in Ugento offers a truly unique stay in a beautifully historical building, just a short walk from the town center. The rooms are spacious and thoughtfully decorated, with the warm hospitality of the owners, Cadia and Antonio, making the experience even more special.

📍Luxury Leukos, dimora di charme in Salve Leukos, offers a peaceful and luxurious retreat surrounded by nature, with a beautifully maintained villa, inviting pool, and private outdoor space perfect for relaxation. The property is immaculate, with extra touches like a comfortable patio, and a well-kept garden, making it an ideal stay in the Salento area.

Alternative for beaches: Gargano Peninsula

The Gargano Peninsula in northern Puglia also offers a beautiful coastline. Compared to other parts of this region, the peninsula is more ‘wild’ and has an untouched feel.

Besides beautiful beaches, the towns Vieste and Peschici are worth visiting, just as hopping on a boat tour to admire the cliff and rock formations.

Lastly, the Umbra Forest is one of the last remaining forests of its kind in Italy and offers fantastic hiking opportunities.

Despite being somewhat hidden from travelers, the Italians know where to find the best beaches. So even though Gargano Peninsula isn’t touristy yet, it can get packed in the summer months and sunlounger rental can be compulsory.

Pros

• Beautiful natural scenery with the Gargano National Park nearby.
• Less crowded beaches with pristine waters.
• Ideal for nature lovers who enjoy hiking and exploring.

Cons

• Requires a car to fully explore and appreciate the region.
• Not as many dining or entertainment options as in other coastal towns.

Places stay in Gargano Peninsula for beaches

📍Mid-Range Le Fronde in Vieste offers an enjoyable stay in an olive grove, with stunning sea views and warm, attentive hosts. The spacious, modern rooms and delicious homemade meals make it the perfect spot to relax and enjoy the beauty of the Adriatic coast.

📍Luxury Villa Basso Gargano in Monte Sant’Angelo offers a stunning, well-decorated space with incredible views, making it a perfect retreat. The fully equipped apartment, along with a fantastic rooftop terrace, ensures a comfortable stay and the helpful host adds to the overall experience.

5. Lecce – Where To Stay in Puglia for Families

We found it difficult to choose one specific place to stay in Puglia for families. Most kids love beaches, but if they are older, they might like wandering through narrow streets too. At least our son always enjoys playing the tour guide as he decides which narrow streets we have to take.

For Puglia, we don’t recommend staying in one place for kids. Tour around the region so kids and parents can enjoy the mix of beaches, countryside, little villages, and a quick visit to bigger towns.

A great way to discover Puglia with kids is to stay in Monopoli, find a nice accommodation just outside Martina Franca or Ostuni for a couple of days, and continue to one of the beach villages between Torre Lapillo and Santa Maria di Lueca. Finally, visit Lecce and explore the town and the nearby beaches along the Adriatic coast.

But…if we had to choose a base for families in Puglia then it would be…

Lecce

You might think Lecce is a big town, so not the place to stay with kids. We agree. Despite being a very walkable city plus there are many things to do for kids, we don’t recommend staying right in the city center. Instead, choose an accommodation just outside town in the beautiful countryside.

Lecce is just a short drive from both the Adriatic coast and the Ionian Sea, giving families access to Lecce highlights and to some of Puglia’s best beaches, like Torre dell’Orso or Porto Cesareo – just 30–40 minutes away.

Or like us, we ended at the lovely Spiaggia Libera Era Ura just under Brindisi.

Lecce is also great base for exploring nearby towns like Otranto, Gallipoli, and Santa Maria di Leuca, as well as regional parks.

Pros

• Easy to reach the Adriatic and Ionian coasts, just the inland olive groves and historic villages.
• Small city with a laid-back vibe, ideal for families with kids.
• Depending on the time of year, there are family-friendly festivals with food, music, and performances.

Cons

• Can get hot in summer.
• No direct beach access, car is needed to reach nearby beaches
• Limited activities for very young kids in the city itself such as playgrounds, and amusement parks

Places to stay in Lecce for families

The hosts, Rita and her family make you feel right at home. The beautiful surroundings, including a large swimming pool and playground, make it an ideal spot for a family stay.

📍Luxury La Dimora dei Gelsi in Castri di Lecce offers a wonderful retreat with a large house, beautiful garden, and pool, perfect for families and children to enjoy. The comfortable bedrooms, relaxing hammock, and serene surroundings make it perfect to explore the area.

Alternative for families: Gallipoli

Alternatively, the family-friendly Gallipoli is a great choice. Located on the Ionian Sea, this seaside town has beautiful, shallow sandy beaches that are perfect for children to play and swim safely.

The historic center, with its narrow streets and unique architecture, is ideal for exploring.

Families can also enjoy boat trips, and head to the stunning nearby beaches and charming coastal villages such as Santa Maria al Bagno or Porto Selvaggio Natural Park for nature-based adventures.

• Family-friendly beaches with shallow, safe waters.
• A mix of historic charm and modern amenities.
• Proximity to natural parks and kid-friendly attractions.

Cons

• Can get crowded during the summer months.
• Parking in the historic center can be challenging.

Places to stay in Gallipoli with family

We visited Puglia in April, during the low season, and loved that we were often the only tourists. With deserted beaches, easy parking in historic towns, and empty narrow streets, it felt like we had the region all to ourselves. But, as wonderful it was to be the only ones, there were moments when it felt almost too quiet.

Many accommodations were closed, only a handful of restaurants in smaller towns were open, and finding a place for lunch was almost impossible.

If you’re planning a trip during the low season, consider staying in larger towns like Bari, Brindisi, Gallipoli, or Lecce. These cities maintain a lively atmosphere year-round, with plenty of dining and accommodation options.

Tourist hotspots like Polignano a Mare also remain active, offering a range of places to stay and eat. The smaller coastal towns can feel eerily quiet, with shuttered shops and houses closed down for the winter months.

Stay in the countryside

During the summer, Puglia transforms into a bustling hotspot, both in its towns and along its coastline. The good news? Puglia isn’t massive, so you can easily stay further inland and still enjoy the incredible beaches and must-see sights without driving for miles on end.

Besides escaping the crowds, staying inland has other advantages. You’ll find it easier to escape the intense summer heat that can make exploring towns like Lecce intense. A countryside retreat surrounded by olive groves or a little village stay can provide a cooler alternative—perfect for unwinding after a day of exploring.

For the adventurous, renting a scooter is a fantastic way to get around, especially in the area around Polignano a Mare and Itria Valley. Highlights are not far from each other so you won’t be on the road too much. Plus the little roads will take you along the olive groves, providing an even more Puglian experience.
