Where to stay in Mauritius – Best Places For Any Traveler

While we’ve broken down the best places to stay in Mauritius by travel style, the truth is: every corner of the island has something special to offer.

That’s why we recommend reading through all the places we’ve mentioned. Each area has its own unique vibe, and you might be surprised by what catches your eye.

Our top tip? Move around! Staying in multiple areas will save you long drives back and forth—and honestly, it’s the best way to experience the full range of what Mauritius has to offer. We’ve even put together a 1-week Mauritius itinerary to help you plan an unforgettable road trip across the island, hitting all the highlights.

Troux Aux Biches – Best Places To Stay in Mauritius for First-Timers

Troux Aux Biches Beach

For first-time visitors, the north or west coast is ideal. Grand Baie or Flic en Flac are popular places to stay in Mauritius for its tourist infrastructure, easy beach access, and a wide choice of restaurants, tours, and accommodations. These areas are well-developed, making them stress-free bases to explore the island.

But these are actually the reasons why we would skip Grand Baie and highly recommend going for Trou aux Biches – or alternatively Mont Choisy. These spots are just a short drive from Grand Baie. You will still have easy access to everything it offers, without the overly commercial, crowded feel.

Grand Baie is still somewhat quiet in the mornings

A single main road connects Trou aux Biches, Mont Choisy, Grand Baie, and Pereybere. However, the further north you go, the busier and less charming it becomes. This may be due to the dense strip of restaurants, beach clubs, and shops lining the way through Grand Baie and Pereybere.

We actually stayed in Pereybere, hoping it would be a quieter alternative to Grand Baie. And maybe it was, but the two towns blend so closely together that it’s hard to tell where one ends and the other begins.

Driving through Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy, with the tall green trees and hardly any traffic, we knew we would have enjoyed our stay here much more.

If you’re traveling to Mauritius with kids, Flic en Flac is one of the best choices for families. This west coast beach town has a laid-back, local vibe with plenty of family-friendly accommodations. You can choose from beachfront resorts to spacious apartments in quiet residential areas.

The beach itself is perfect for little ones: calm, shallow waters, soft sand, and shaded areas under the trees. There are public facilities like toilets and showers, plus lots of food trucks, casual restaurants, and supermarkets nearby, making daily logistics super easy.

Picnic time

We really enjoyed our stay in Flic en Flac. We found a lovely apartment just a five-minute walk from the public beach. One of the things we loved most? You can choose to be right in the heart of the buzz, or wander a few meters down the shore and find your own peaceful spot under the trees.

Just a bit further south, you’ll find Wolmar Beach. It offers a similar setting. This beach has oft sand, calm waters—but feels a bit quieter and more exclusive. There are however less public facilities here. It’s more focus on upscale beach resorts. Still, it’s just as family-friendly and perfect for a relaxed beach day.

Alternative places to stay for families:

Another great option for families is Trou aux Biches, known for its long, safe beach with calm, shallow waters. It’s perfect for kids to splash around and try snorkeling right from the shore. Belle Mare Beach

Whether you’re celebrating an anniversary or simply escaping for some quality time together, Mauritius is packed with wonderful spots perfect for couples. For a relaxed, escape head to the beautiful beach of Belle Mare. There is a large selection of adult-only resorts.

When we visited the east coast of Mauritius, we booked a stay in Trou d’Eau Douce. To be very honest, we’re still not quite sure why. It’s where the boats leave for Île aux Cerfs yet visiting this island wasn’t even high on our list.

father and son walking along belle mare beach, a long stretched tropical beach with flower, trees, soft sand and blue sea.

Maybe we thought it was a smart, central spot to explore the east? In reality, after seeing more of the area, we realized we totally should’ve picked Belle Mare instead. It had the beaches, the vibe, and basically everything we were actually looking for.

Alternative places to stay for couples

If you’re the adventurous type, head to the west coast such as Le Morne (luxury) or La Gaulette (budget). Here you can go dolphin spotting, explore waterfalls such as Tamarin and Chamarel Falls, or hike in Black River Gorges before winding down with a beachfront dinner. La Gaulette isn’t the most charming town, but practical when it comes to location.

Trou aux Biches is another favorite. As mentioned earlier, its less crowded than Grand Baie, but still close enough for dinner dates or casual night outs.

You won’t get tired of this view!

There’s no question in our minds Le Morne is ideal for couples who want both luxury and adventure. Its stunning backdrop of the Le Morne Brabant mountain and tranquil beaches make it a dream destination for honeymooners.

Unsurprisingly, this paradise is home exclusively to luxury resorts. But let’s be honest—honeymoons are usually a once-in-a-lifetime kind of trip, and splurging here feels more than worth it.

Alternative places to stay for honeymooners

For something a little more off the radar, the east coast’s Belle Mare is a beautiful choice. The beaches are long and quiet, the resorts are ultra-romantic, and the vibe is peaceful. Just note that it’s windier here, especially in July and August. So the shoulder season (April–June or September–October) is ideal.

La Gaulette – Best Places to Stay in Mauritius for Budget Travelers

Sunset at La Gaulette

Mauritius might be famous for luxury resorts, but it’s also a fantastic destination for travelers on a budget. The trick is knowing where to base yourself.

La Gaulette, near Le Morne on the southwest coast, is a top choice. This small village has a growing number of affordable guesthouses and self-catering apartments. It’s ideally located for exploring both the beaches and nearby nature parks.

To be very honest, it isn’t the most characterful town. Most restaurants and shops are set along the main road. So, let’s say it is convenient place to stay.

father and son posing on a motor scooter in a narrow side street with houses, there is a mountain with green slopes in the back in La Gaulette Mauritius
Most accommodations in La Gaulette are found in the narrow side streets

Looking back, we definitely would’ve preferred staying in La Gaulette rather than the small village of Le Morne Brabant. While Le Morne Village offers a local, authentic feel—which we loved—it was a bit too quiet for practical daily needs. There were no nearby restaurants or supermarkets, so we always found ourselves driving 10 minutes to La Gaulette for groceries or dinner.

Sure, 10 minutes doesn’t sound like much. But once night falls, the roads get pitch dark. At some day it just didn’t exactly motivate us to go out for dinner. In the end, we spent more time in La Gaulette anyway, so staying there would’ve just made everything easier.

Alternatives places to stay for budget travelers

An other option is Flic en Flac. We stayed at a mid-range accommodation. There is enough types of restaurants to choose from, buses will take you along the main beach road and food trucks are the most popular here.

Mahebourg, on the southeast coast, is another underrated gem. It’s close to the airport (saving on transfers), rich in local culture, and sits near Blue Bay Marine Park—perfect for budget snorkeling trips. You’ll find street food, local markets, and authentic Mauritian charm without tourist crowds.

If you’d rather stay up north, Pereybere and Mont Choisy offer reasonably priced stays close to beaches, public transport, and cheap eats.

Public buses are easy to use, and with many free or low-cost activities (like hiking, beach days, and street food adventures), Mauritius can definitely be enjoyed without breaking the bank.

Places to stay in La Gaulette

📍BudgetEbony Apartment & Studio is a top choice for budget travelers seeking comfort, cleanliness, and a great location near Le Morne and Mauritius’ southwest coast. Do-Over: Our Ideal Mauritius Stays

a quiet main road with a park on one side and houses on the right at Le Morne Brabant Mauritius
Le Morne Brabant Village

We split our two-week trip to Mauritius across four different places: Le Morne Brabant, Flic en Flac, Pereybere, and Trou d’Eau Douce—with our longest stay in Le Morne.

While we genuinely enjoyed our time (we had great stays and met some wonderful hosts), if we were to do it again, we’d probably make a few different choices. For more things we learnt during our travels in Mauritius, have a look at the mistakes we made that could easily have been avoided.

The places we wished we had stayed instead:

La Gaulette instead of Le Morne Brabant Village

a balcony terrace on the first floor with view of the street and park with trees in Mauritius Le Morne Brabant
Le Morne Brabant Village

We loved the beauty of Le Morne Brabant Village (not the same as Le Morne Beach), but in reality, we only stayed there for the accommodation. For everything else—groceries and dinners—we drove to La Gaulette.

In hindsight, staying in La Gaulette would’ve been far more convenient and still close to all the highlights of the south.

Flic en Flac

residential street in Flic en Flac, with palm trees lined along the gated houses
A typical residential street in Flic en Flac

We really enjoyed our time here. It’s perfect for lazy beach days, with enough local life to keep things interesting. It also worked well as a base for day trips to Tamarin, Black River Gorges, and even Port Louis.

Trou aux Biches instead of Pereybere

man standing in front of a two story accommodation with balconies and decorated with green tropical plants in pereybere Mauritius

We stayed in Pereybere thinking it would be calmer than Grand Baie—and maybe it was—but both towns blend into each other and felt a bit too busy for us.

Looking back, Trou aux Biches or Mont Choisy would’ve suited us better. They offer a more laid-back vibe, fewer shops and restaurants, and beaches that feel a little more secluded.

Belle Mare instead of Trou d’Eau Douce

two motor scooters are being loaded on the pack of a pickup in the east of Mauritius
The rental picked the scooters up at Trou D’Eau Douce, our final stop.

We picked Trou d’Eau Douce without realizing it’s really centered around trips to Île aux Cerfs, which wasn’t a priority for us. The town felt a bit uncharming, and we missed having a beach at our doorstep.

If we could do it over, we’d stay in Belle Mare or Palmar, where the beaches are wide, peaceful, and truly stunning.

father and son on a motor scooter driving through the mountains with green vegetation in the south of Mauritius
We loved exploring the mountain road in South Mauritius

Overall, we’re so glad we based ourselves mostly in the south of the island, because this part really stole our hearts. It’s not just about beaches, there’s a richness in the landscape, from mountains to waterfalls, that makes it feel a bit more wild and authentic.

If we had one more chance to tweak the trip, we’d definitely have added a few nights near Mahebourg too, to avoid all the back-and-forth driving.

FAQ On Best Places To Stay In Mauritius

tomatoes, pineapple, papaya, cocounut and mango for sale along the street at a fruit stall in Mauritius

Which area is the best to stay in Mauritius?

It really depends on what kind of trip you’re after. For year-round sunshine and lots of things to do, the west and north are great bets.

Looking for romance and a more peaceful escape? Head to the east. And if you’re all about nature, hiking, and a bit of off-the-beaten-path adventure, then the south is where you’ll want to be.

Every corner of Mauritius has its own magic—so instead of choosing one, we’d recommend mixing and matching to get the full experience.

Besides its beaches, Mauritius is full of lush green landscapes too

How many days is enough for Mauritius?

We spent two weeks in Mauritius and still left with a list of things we didn’t get to see. You can definitely explore a lot in one week, but if you’re someone who enjoys slow mornings, spontaneous stops, and maybe a few beach naps—10 days is a sweet spot. Especially if you’re planning day trips and want a buffer for potential rainy days.

Gris Gris Beach

Which part of Mauritius is the best to visit?

The big debate tends to be west vs. east, and while we agree the west is more developed with more activities and better weather, Matt and I actually preferred the south.

It felt less polished, more local—and it’s where we found some of the most stunning natural spots: waterfalls, mountain trails, tea plantations, and empty beaches without a single hotel in sight. So if you’re after raw beauty over convenience, we say go south.

Expect clear water and the most amazing blue water…

Which side of Mauritius has the best beaches?

The west wins for variety! From the dramatic beauty of Le Morne, the family-friendly vibe of Flic en Flac, to the relaxed stretch of Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy, there’s a beach for every mood.

That said, don’t underestimate the east. Belle Mare and Palmar are stunning, especially if you’re after quiet, untouched coastline. Just keep in mind it can be windier, depending on the season.

Try local food, delicious and cheap…

Is Mauritius expensive or cheap?

It really depends on your travel style. If you’re dreaming of five-star resorts, infinity pools, and private beach dinners—you’ll find plenty of that here. But we were pleasantly surprised by how affordable Mauritius can be if you plan smart.

We found great places to stay for USD 40–60 USD a night, ate delicious dinner food for around USD 40 for the three of us, and even tours (like dolphin watching or full-day island trips) hovered around USD 50 per person. It’s not “Southeast Asia cheap,” but for an island paradise? Pretty reasonable.

Check out how much we spent for our two week trip to Mauritius here.

Our Final Take on the Best Places to Stay in Mauritius

After exploring the island for two weeks, bouncing between coastlines and villages, we can honestly say: there’s no one “best” place to stay in Mauritius. Each area has its own charm and rhythm.

If you’re after nature and adventure, we absolutely loved the south—it felt wild, authentic, and beautifully untouched. For families, Flic en Flac was a favorite with its long beach, easy vibe, and great amenities.

Couples and honeymooners will adore the romance of Le Morne or the quiet elegance of Belle Mare.

And if you’re here for the buzz, Grand Baie and its nearby beaches like Trou aux Biches and Mont Choisy give you energy without overwhelming you (if you pick wisely).

Would we do things differently? Yes. And that’s exactly why we wrote this, so you can plan your stay with a bit more clarity than we had. Mix it up, move around, and let each side of Mauritius show you a different side of paradise. You really can’t go wrong.
