Slovenia 7 Day Itinerary: The Route We’d Do Again
New to Slovenia? This 7 Day Slovenia Itinerary is the perfect road trip for first time visitors
When we started planning our trip to Slovenia, our list of things to see and do just got longer and longer. Slovenia might be a small country but with its mountains, turquoise rivers, epic waterfalls, caves, beaches, and historic towns with a Mediterranean vibe we soon became overwhelmed. How could we put all these sights into one trip without criss crossing the country?
Well we tried, and failed.
With so much on our list, we even missed out on one of the most stunning mountain passes and even detoured a bit to see the most popular waterfall in Slovenia, only to be super disappointed after seeing far more characterful ones.
Nevertheless we had an unforgettable time we truly fell in love with this country. And while traveling means that it doesn’t always go as you have planned (rain can definitely mess things up) we have created the road trip we would do again after traveling to Slovenia for two whole weeks.
You can consider this 7 day itinerary our ultimate Slovenia itinerary for first-timers, or our do-over itinerary or how we would have wanted to visit Slovenia if we only had 1 week.
Our road trip itinerary in a quick glance:
Day 1 Ljublijana – Arrival

Why this 7 day Itinerary Slovenia works

We did a road trip through Slovenia—and honestly, that’s the best way to experience it. The country may look small on the map, but winding mountain roads mean getting from A to B often takes longer than expected.
Many travelers base themselves in Ljubljana, which works well for quick trips to places like the caves or Lake Bled. But if you want to truly experience Slovenia’s different regions, moving around makes a big difference. Otherwise, you risk spending more time in the car than out exploring.
For this trip, we focused mainly on the northwest and west of Ljubljana. While the eastern part of the country no doubt has plenty to offer, narrowing our route allowed us to slow down and really enjoy each area instead of constantly driving.

In Slovenia, cars up to 3.5 t must have a highway vignette. It can be purchased online, at gas stations, or at border points. Vignettes are valid for 7 days (€16), 1 month (€32), or 1 year (€117). Your licence plate will be registered, so you don’t have to display a ‘toll sticker’ on you windshield. Get your highway vignette here
Also we did not add the famous coastal town Piran and it’s charming neighbors. We loved strolling through their narrow cobbled streets and even swam in the Mediterranean. But with just 1 week, we think it would be too stressful to add this. Plus we prefer quality over quantity, so better to experience something to the fullest.
That said, flexibility is key. We originally planned a neat loop, but bad weather had other ideas. To avoid heavy rain, we ended up zig-zagging across the country—spending extra time in the Soča Valley and Bohinj, detouring toward the coast, and looping back through Ljubljana and Lake Bled. It wasn’t the plan, but it worked—and that’s part of the magic of road-tripping Slovenia.
Don’t feel like renting a car? Stay in Ljubljana and explore Slovenia on easy day trips. We recommend the following tour to experience just how diverse this beautiful country is.

Our 7–8 day Slovenia road trip

We designed this 7 day Slovenia road trip to experience the country’s highlights without rushing. By focusing on scenic drives, alpine lakes, mountain passes, and the Soča Valley, we created a balanced route that maximizes time in nature and minimizes backtracking – so you can easily recreate this trip yourself.
Day 1 – Ljubljana
Overnight: Ljubljana

Most visitors start their visit to Slovenia in Ljubljana, the perfect introduction to Slovenia: compact, green, and incredibly charming. We loved the fact that the city center is pedestrian only, so perfect to just wander and admire this beautiful city without watching out for traffic.
We spent a whole morning and afternoon exploring the Old Town and crossing the iconic bridges along the Ljubljana River. If time permits, you can also ride the funicular up to Ljubljana Castle for panoramic views.
The café-lined riverbanks make this an ideal arrival day, even if your flight lands in the afternoon or evening.

Clean, quiet, and comfortable with a handy kitchenette.
📍Midrange Apartment Castle View: This stylish two-level apartment with castle views and free parking is a fantastic value in Ljubljana—bright, well-equipped, tastefully decorated, and just a pleasant 15-minute walk from the old town, river, restaurants, and Tivoli Park. What truly sets it apart is Igor, a super host who offers a warm welcome, local tips, and genuine care.

Day 2 – Ljubljana → Vintgar Gorge → Lake Bled
Overnight: Lake Bled

Leave Ljubljana after breakfast and head north toward the Julian Alps. A stop at Vintgar Gorge is the perfect way to stretch your legs — wooden walkways wind above turquoise water and waterfalls, and the loop takes around 90 minutes at an easy pace.
It’s a stunning place and, understandably, very popular. Be sure to book ahead for a morning time slot and arrive exactly on time — entry times are strictly managed, and arriving too early or too late can mean missing out.

After a refreshing morning walk, continue on to Lake Bled. There are plenty of ways to experience the lake. We chose to hire bikes and cycle the loop, which can easily be done in about an hour.
Other options include walking the lakeside path, swimming in the warmer months, or hopping on a boat for a closer look at the Church of the Assumption on the island.
For the classic postcard view — the church framed by mountains — stop at the Mala Osojnica viewpoint. The short hike up is steep in places, but the views at the top make it well worth the effort.

Another must-see is Bled Castle. Perched dramatically on a steep cliff above the lake, it’s one of Slovenia’s oldest castles. It’s exceptional location and stunning views over Lake Bled make this a popular stop for visitors.
Places to stay in Bled
📍Budget: Vila Lipa is a great value find in a town where accommodation is generally expensive—go cheaper and you’ll usually be looking at a hostel—yet here you get a comfortable, well-kept stay in a central location just steps from Lake Bled. Clean rooms with large balconies, a well-equipped shared kitchen, easy parking, and friendly staff make it a smart choice above the low-budget segment without paying typical Bled hotel prices.
📍Midrange Garni Hotel Berc: a charming, family-run retreat with a warm, homey atmosphere, just a short stroll above Lake Bled, offering beautiful views, impeccable cleanliness, free parking, and an tasty breakfast to start each day. With friendly local staff, complimentary bicycles for easy sightseeing, and a peaceful yet perfectly central location.
📍Luxury Hotel Starkl offers an unforgettable stay right on Lake Bled, with amazing balcony views of the lake, island boats, and castle—waking up here feels truly special, especially with coffee enjoyed over the calm water and mountains. Beautifully renovated rooms, superb breakfasts, attentive staff, and direct access to the traditional boats make this a relaxing yet perfectly located base for exploring Bled.
Day 3 – Lake Bled (Morning) → Lake Bohinj
Overnight: Bohinj or Ribčev Laz

Enjoy a relaxed morning at Lake Bled, or use the time to fit in any activities you didn’t get to the day before.
In the afternoon, drive just 40 minutes to Lake Bohinj — a quieter, more natural alternative to Bled. Spend some time walking along the lakeshore, or head to the nearby Mostnica Gorge, where crystal-clear pools and beautifully sculpted rock formations make for an easy and rewarding walk.

If time allows, continue on to the waterfall at the end of the gorge. We arrived a little unprepared and hadn’t brought enough food or water, and by the time hunger kicked in, we had to turn back — something we definitely regretted, as it looks absolutely worth the extra effort.
During our trip, we spent a few days near Lake Bohinj, and it quickly became one of our favorite places in Slovenia. Even in high season, the area felt calm and unspoiled, without the crowds we’d seen elsewhere. The peaceful atmosphere made it perfect for slowly SUP-ping across the lake and exploring its corners at an relaxing pace.

With a well-equipped kitchen, private bathroom, laundry access, parking, and a lovely balcony overlooking mountain sunsets, it combines comfort, convenience, and warm hospitality in one great stay.
📍Mid Range Goat’s Paradise is set beside a gentle river, surrounded by mountain views, modern interiors and of course, the adorable goats that make the experience unforgettable. With a relaxing wellness area, fantastic restaurant, warm and flexible staff, and a peaceful location perfect for unwinding after exploring.
Day 4 – Bohinj → Vogel → Scenic Drive to Bovec
Overnight: Bovec

In the morning, head up the Vogel Cable Car for sweeping views over Triglav National Park. On a clear day, the panorama is unforgettable, and with the first cabin going up at 8:00 a.m., it’s worth starting early.
Nearby, you’ll also find the well-known Slap Savica waterfall. Reaching it requires a short hike, but the well-maintained paths and stairs make it easily accessible. To be completely honest, we found the viewing platform quite small and narrow, which made it less enjoyable to linger and really take in the waterfall. That said, if you’re already in the area, it’s still worth a quick visit.

From Bohinj, continue your journey toward the Kranjska Gora area. Surrounded by dramatic mountain peaks, stop at Lake Jasna — a stunning alpine lake where you can enjoy an easy walk along the water’s edge.
From there, head to the Zelenci Nature Reserve, where a short, flat walk leads to the vibrant emerald waters of Zelenci Spring Lake. It’s another beautiful stop and well worth allowing extra time to explore at a relaxed pace.

Afterwards, rejoin the road toward the dramatic Vršič Pass towards Trenta— one of Slovenia’s most scenic mountain routes. Expect a series of hairpin turns, sweeping alpine views, and plenty of opportunities to pull over for photos before descending into the equally stunning Soča Valley.

With delicious homemade breakfasts and a prime location just a short walk from Bovec’s shops, restaurants, and hiking trails, it’s an unforgettable base for exploring the Julian Alps.
Day 5 – Soča Valley (Bovec Area)
Overnight Bovec

Dedicate a full day to the Soča Valley, famous for its unreal emerald-colored river. We spent our time in Bovec visiting waterfalls, kayaking along the river with dramatic mountain views, and braving the ice-cold water at the Great Soča Gorge.
We chose to go kayaking in the afternoon, as it’s often said to be the quietest time to go during the high-season. In hindsight, we’d recommend booking either a morning or early afternoon trip so you still have plenty of time to explore the Great Soča Gorge, visit the waterfalls or walk sections of the Soča Valley Trail afterward.

Day 6 – Soča Valley → Škocjan Caves → Ljubljana
Overnight: Ljubljana
Rather than trying to squeeze both the coast and the caves into one trip, this itinerary focuses on one of Slovenia’s most unique experiences: the Škocjan Caves. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, the vast underground chambers and dramatic river canyon feel almost otherworldly.

We chose to visit the Škocjan Caves and were struck by the immense cave gorge and towering chambers.
Along the way, you’ll also pass the well-known Postojna Caves. They’re larger in scale, feature a train that runs through the cave system, and can be combined with a visit to the nearby Predjama castle — making them a popular choice for many travelers.

The idea of an underground train at Postojna felt a little too large-scale for our taste, but there’s no doubt those caves are just as impressive in their own way. It really comes down to which experience suits your travel style best.
After your cave visit, return to Ljubljana for a relaxed final evening — ideal for a farewell dinner or one last stroll through the city.

How Many Days In Slovenia is Enough?

Seven days is enough time to experience many of Slovenia’s highlights without rushing. With a well-planned itinerary, it’s possible to explore the capital, visit iconic alpine lakes, travel through the mountains, and spend time in the Soča Valley.
However, Slovenia offers a remarkable amount of variety for its size, and travelers who enjoy slower pacing or outdoor activities may find that a week only scratches the surface.

We spent two whole weeks enjoying this incredible country, staying longer in Soca Valley yet still feeling we didn’t stay long enough. Eventually it all depends what you plan to do.
Seven days in Slovenia works well for a first visit, while longer stays allow for deeper exploration of the coast, lesser-known regions, and multi-day hikes.
When Is The Best Time To Go To Slovenia?

The best time to visit Slovenia largely depends on travel style, but late spring to early summer (May to June) is often ideal. During these months, temperatures are comfortable, landscapes are lush, and mountain roads and hiking trails are fully accessible.
Summer (July and August) brings warmer weather and peak tourism, especially around Lake Bled and coastal areas. A crowd might be a bad thing for some, but the warm weather and long day light makes it perfect to enjoy swims and to visit the popular sights later in the day when the large crowds have left.

Autumn offers fewer crowds and beautiful fall colors. Winter is best suited for skiing and winter sports, particularly in the alpine regions.
Where to Stay in Slovenia as a Base?

Ljubljana is one of the most convenient places to stay in Slovenia if you don’t want to go on a road trip, especially for travelers planning to explore multiple regions. Its central location, excellent public transport connections, and compact city center make it an easy base for day trips and short overnights elsewhere in the country.
While the capital works well as a main hub, staying one or two nights in destinations like Bled, Bohinj, or the Soča Valley can reduce travel time and allow for early mornings in scenic areas.

Slovenia’s small size makes moving between bases simple and efficient. However do keep in mind, that with its twisting roads through the mountains, travel times may be much longer compared to the distance.
Ljubljana is an excellent base for exploring Slovenia, with many day tours departing directly from the city. We recommend these trips as they combine multiple highlights in one day, making it an efficient and stress-free way to see more of the country.

No-Car Travel: Can You Do This Without Driving?

While we have experienced Slovenia to be the ideal destination to explore on your own wheels, it is possible to see it without a car. However you need to plan more travel time, meaning you will not be able to follow our recommended 7 day Slovenia itinerary.
But if public transport is your way to go, then you are in luck. Slovenia’s train and bus network is reliable and affordable, making no-car travel very feasible:
- Ljubljana → Bled / Bohinj: Direct buses and trains run frequently
- Bled ↔ Bohinj: Easy local bus connection
- Ljubljana → Bovec: Possible by bus (longer travel time, but scenic)
- Caves: Day tours to Škocjan or Postojna Caves are available from Ljubljana

What changes without a car?
- You may skip the Vršič Pass drive
- Travel days are slightly longer
- Guided tours replace some flexibility
Slovenia is one of Europe’s easiest countries to explore without renting a car, especially if you’re comfortable with buses and occasional tours.
FAQ Slovenia Itinerary 7 Days
Is Slovenia still cheap?

Slovenia is generally cheaper than many Western European countries, especially when it comes to groceries, public transport, and sightseeing in smaller towns. Compared to countries like Italy, Switzerland, or France, day-to-day costs can feel very reasonable.
That said, we were still surprised by how expensive eating out and certain tours could be, particularly in popular tourist areas like Lake Bled or the Soča Valley.
Accommodation costs also vary widely depending on the season — high summer can be pricey, while staying off-season or booking in advance can make a big difference. Overall, Slovenia is affordable, but it pays to plan ahead for meals and activities.

Is Soca Valley Worth Visiting?

If you love nature, breathtaking views, and a place that still feels relatively untouched then Soca Vally is definitely worth adding to your trip. To be honest, we think it is even a must when traveling to Slovenia.
Don’t expect hidden gems; tourism has long discovered this part of Slovenia. That said, the valley retains a natural charm despite being well-organized, clean, and welcoming.
There’s plenty to do for everyone: active travelers can hike, kayak, or cycle, families can enjoy easy trails and waterfalls, and even those who prefer a scenic drive will be rewarded with some of the most stunning landscapes in the country.
We spent almost one whole week Soca Valley and still felt we didn’t have enough time.
To see what we suggest doing in Soca Valley for three days, have a look at our 3 days Soca Valley Itinerary.
Does Slovenia have Waterfalls?

Slovenia has a seemingly endless list of waterfalls, and you would need weeks to visit them all. Some are well-known and popular, while many others remain hidden gems that you can discover on your own. These lesser-known waterfalls are often completely natural — no ticket offices, no gates, no viewing platforms, and usually no crowds. Just pure and untouched beauty.
We visited numerous waterfalls. Want to know which one we loved best? Check out our favorite Slovenia waterfalls.
Is Slovenia worth visiting with Kids?

Slovenia is a wonderful destinations for kids. Our 10 year old son loved the water-based activities, from SUP-ing on the lakes to kayaking. Some of the hikes were more challenging, but there are plenty of shorter, kid-friendly trails — like Vintgar Gorge, Mostnica Gorge, and Tolmin Gorge — that lead to waterfalls in about 20 minutes, often with the bonus of a swim.
River swimming in the Soča River and lakes like Bled and Bohinj also make Slovenia a fantastic destination for families who want a mix of adventure and relaxation.
We have listed a many great things to do in Bohinj with kids, for very young till the teenagers.
Wrap Up: Our Ultimate 7 Days Slovenia itinerary

Slovenia has so much to offer that we’re convinced you need to visit more than once—or stay much longer—to truly experience it all.
What we love most is how this small country caters to every type of traveler. As hikers, we were amazed by the endless trails (some lasting weeks!), while adventure lovers can fill their days with kayaking, canyoning, and rafting. At the same time, families and easygoing travelers can effortlessly mix nature, sightseeing, and relaxation, enjoying a little bit of everything along the way.
No matter your travel style, you’re sure to fall in love with Slovenia just as we did.
