Our Soča Valley 3 day Itinerary

Our 3 day Soča Valley itinerary is built around the valley’s three main towns—Bovec, Kobarid, and Tolmin. Each day highlights the best things to do in one area, but the beauty of the Soča Valley is how close everything is. If it works better for you, you can easily swap days around or mix and match activities.

When we visited, we based ourselves in Tolmin, the southernmost of the three towns. From there, it was only about a 45-minute drive up to Bovec, which made day trips super easy. You could do the same—pick one base and explore from there—or, if you’d rather not backtrack, spend a night or two in each town to experience a different side of the valley.

Note: This 3 day Soča Valley itinerary is designed with summer in mind, when long daylight hours make it easier to fit in more activities (and enjoy a refreshing swim in the river). If you’re visiting in spring or autumn, you can follow the same plan—just skip the swimming spots. We’ve left out evening activities, as most afternoons run late and you’ll likely be ready for nothing more than a relaxing dinner.

Day 1 Bovec Area

Enough tourist companies in Bovec town

Kick off the 3 day Soča Valley itinerary in Bovec, the outdoor capital of Slovenia. Nestled among the Julian Alps, this lively town is the perfect base for adrenaline sports, turquoise waterfalls, and some of the valley’s most breathtaking scenery.

Day Morning: Waterfalls & Adventure

Virje Waterfall

Start your day bright and early with a visit to Virje Waterfall, just a 10-minute drive from Bovec. There’s a small parking area nearby (€4 an hour). If you arrive early—even in the busy summer months—you’ll likely find a spot.

The walk down is easy, and soon you’ll be standing in front of a pretty waterfall surrounded by lush forest. We spent about an hour here, sipping tea on a little bench with our leftover breakfast, just soaking it all in. It was the perfect slow start before a day packed with adventure.

Boka Waterfall

If you have a bit more time, or if you’re driving from Tolmin or Kobarid, you can also stop at Boka Waterfall. Slap (= waterfall in Slovanian) Boka is the largest waterfall in Slovenia. It only takes about 10 minutes to hike to the viewpoint, and seeing the power of the water crashing down is well worth it. On a tight schedule, you could even squeeze in both waterfalls before your main activity.

Outdoor Adventure

From here, it’s time for an adrenaline kick. Most travelers choose kayaking on the Soča River—and for good reason. Gliding across that crystal-clear turquoise water is unforgettable. If kayaking isn’t your thing, you can swap it for rafting, canyoning, or even paragliding if you’re up for something totally different.

👉 Good to know: In summer, most tours start early (around 8:30 AM), so plan to do your adventure first and the waterfalls after. In spring and autumn, tours usually begin later (around 10:00 AM), which makes it easy to visit a waterfall beforehand.

(Winter) Alternative to Kayaking/Water Sports

If you are not into outdoor watersport or it is just too cold (Slovenia is gorgeous in winter and autumn too!) then we highly recommend this stunning 3 hour drive.

Starting in Bovec head to Trenta and continue to the Vršič Pass, the highest pass in Slovenia crossing the Juliana Alps. From there stop at Jesna Lake before heading back towards Bovec crossing the Italian boarder and back.

Depending on where you are staying, you can mix the activities. If you choose to do the roadtrip to the Vršič Pass on day one and still want to do a kayak trip, you can do this on day two instead – in Bovec or even in Kobarid

Lunch at Bovec

Enjoy lunch nearby the kayak tour company. We went with Soča Adventure who recommended Gostišce Vančar. This is however located somewhat outside Bovec town. If you don’t want to drive the detour, then there are many options in town too. For a unque lunch experience check Bistro 9:45.

Before you go: Many shops and restaurants close on Sundays (though not all), so keep this in mind when planning — your options may be more limited.

Afternoon: Great Soča Gorge & Šunik Waterfall

In the afternoon head out to explore one of the valley’s true natural gems—the Great Soča Gorge. Here, the river has carved out a 750-meter-long canyon with walls up to 15 meters deep. Walking the trail (about 2 km, 1 hour) takes you across bridges and paths that open up to amazing views of the emerald water rushing below.

In summer, the brave (and slightly crazy!) can even take a leap from the cliffs into the icy water. I love swimming in cold water, but somehow it was just too cold after our kayak trip. But I can completely understand the temptation once you see it!

view of a clear blue river flowing passed lush green trees on the river banks, white stones are scattered along the river and in the distance there is a mountain range at Soča Gorge Slovenia

A short drive further brings you to the Šuniks Water Grove (Šunikov vodni gaj). It’s a smaller, lesser-known spot, but that’s part of its charm. The hike down only takes around 40 minutes round trip. With parking nearby, it makes for an easy add-on to your afternoon. The peaceful setting is a lovely contrast after the dramatic gorge.

Together, these visits are a perfect way to round off your first day in the Soča Valley—stunning nature, brilliant colors, and a balance of big sights with quieter corners.

Bovec Whole day activity

Hiking the Soča Trail (Point-to-Point Option)

While we only managed to see glimpses of the Soča Trail, we can’t recommend it enough if you’re just as mesmerized by the river as we were. Instead of adventure sports, you could dedicate a full day to this hike.

The Soča Trail runs for about 25 km between Bovec and the source of the Soča River (Izvir Soče). It takes around 8 hours to complete. You’ll get to experience the valley in a slower, more intimate way, with the river as your constant companion.

Here’s how to make it easier:

  • Catch the Bus in Bovec
In summer, a seasonal bus connects Bovec and Izvir Soče, making a one-way hike possible. Simply hop on the bus in Bovec (around 09:30 double check official website or once there) and ride to the source. The trip takes ~40 minutes and drops you near the trailhead and is around €3-€5 per person.
  • Hike Back Along the River
From Izvir Soče, follow the marked Soča Trail downstream. Expect turquoise pools, wooden bridges, alpine meadows, and plenty of photo stops. The full route back to Bovec is about 25 km, but you can always shorten it and rejoin the bus at intermediate stops.

🌿 Local Tip:

  • Wear sturdy shoes—the paths around the gorge can get slippery.
  • Mornings or late afternoons are quieter, especially in summer.
  • If you’re visiting in spring or autumn, bring a jacket—the gorge stays cool even on warmer days.

On your second day, slow the pace a little and dive into the hidden corners around Kobarid. This area blends culture and nature—waterfalls, historic bridges, and peaceful forest trails—creating it a beautiful balance between adventure and tranquility.

Morning: Košesta Gorge (Košesta Korita)

If you love chasing waterfalls, Košesta Gorge is a hidden gem you shouldn’t miss. From the small village of Drežnica, it’s about a 15-minute hike past farmhouses in Kosec, apple orchards, and a little church before you reach the first waterfall.

From there, signs lead you along a trail to four more cascades, eventually pointing you toward Slap Brusnik. Along the way, you’ll walk through a shady forest filled with mossy rocks and beautiful limestone formations—perfect for peaceful moments away from the crowds.

Two other waterfalls, Slap Stopnik and Slap Krampez, are nearby the parking spot as well. Both are worth the short detours (about 10 minutes each from the parking area). Altogether, this walk is fairly easy, family-friendly, and takes you to some of the most underrated spots in the Soča Valley. We loved how quiet it was compared to the busier sights—it felt like stumbling across a secret.

Lunch at Kobarid

buildings and restaurants along the main road in kobarid Slovenia

For lunch in Kobarid, you’ll find plenty of cozy cafés and family-run eateries serving fresh local dishes — think hearty sandwiches, seasonal specialties, homemade pastries, and regional cheeses and cured meats. Lipa Bar is perfect for a relaxed, warm atmosphere with great food, while Topli Val Restaurant offers a more refined experience.

For something truly unforgettable, end your day with dinner at Hiša Franko, famous for its extraordinary 15-course tasting menu. It’s one of Slovenia’s top culinary experiences, so be sure to book well in advance.

Afternoon: Napoleon Bridge & Kozjak Waterfall

After lunch, drive to the Kozjak Waterfall parking area. From here, walk back to the Napoleon Bridge, one of Kobarid’s most iconic landmarks. The stone bridge offers incredible views of the turquoise Soča River framed by mountains.

We crossed it again later in the early evening after visiting Kozjak, and while the sunset light made for beautiful photos, I would have loved to see the river glowing in full daylight—so don’t skip it early on!

Next, follow the marked trail toward Kozjak Waterfall. From the parking lot, it’s about 15 minutes to the ticket office and another 10 minutes to the waterfall itself. The path is gorgeous, winding first along the Soča River with several lookout points, and then into a canyon where wooden walkways guide you through tall gorge walls.

At the end, you’re rewarded with a dramatic scene: the Kozjak Waterfall plunging into a turquoise pool inside a cave-like chamber. The whole setting with the stunning water makes it a wonderful waterfall.

Instead of going the same way back, you can cross the river via a bridge. If you’re visiting in summer and don’t mind cold water, there are spots nearby where you can climb down for a refreshing dip in the Soča.

Kobarid Whole Day Activity

Tip for Die-Hard Hikers: Hike to Krn Lake

For those who want a real adventure, consider tackling the hike to Krn Lake (Krnsko jezero), the largest glacial lake in the Slovenian mountains. The trailhead starts from Planina Kuhinja (near Kobarid) and takes about 3 hours uphill (2 hours back down).

The hike is moderately challenging, with an elevation gain of around 750 meters, but the reward is stunning views over alpine meadows and the shimmering lake surrounded by the peaks of the Julian Alps. If you have the time and energy, it’s one of the most breathtaking hikes in the Soča Valley.

Where to stay in Kobarid

Day 3 Tolmin

On the final day of our 3 day Soča Valley itinerary, we suggest exploring the southern part of the vally around Tolmin. The place where the emerald rivers converge and dramatic gorges carve through the landscape, offering stunning viewpoints, easy hiking trails.

Morning: Tolmin Gorge

Wake up early and make your way to one of Tolmin’s most famous sights—the Tolmin Gorge. It’s popular, especially in summer, so going early means you’ll enjoy the paths and viewpoints with fewer crowds.

We were immediately impressed by how well-organized Slovenia is when it comes to managing its natural highlights. There are several free parking areas around town with a handy shuttle bus service that drops you right at the entrance. In true stubborn fashion, we first tried the tiny parking lot at the gorge itself—it was, of course, full.

Eventually, we parked at P1, hopped on a shuttle that left almost instantly, and on the way back we decided to walk through the fields back to the car. It took only about 15 minutes and turned out to be a lovely stroll. Highly recommended!

The gorge itself is a natural wonder. Picture turquoise water cutting through dramatic limestone walls, wooden walkways hanging over the river, caves, and several scenic bridges with perfect viewpoints.

One tip from our experience: follow every sign, even if it means backtracking. We skipped one trail (thinking it was optional), only to realize later we’d missed some of the most beautiful parts. Don’t make the same mistake—take your time and explore every corner!

Lunch at Most na Soči

After the gorge, drive to Most na Soči, a postcard-perfect village on the banks of the Soča River. It’s a peaceful spot with lakeside restaurants such as Restaurant Penzion Šterk or Rajko Skrt s.p. gostilna Skrt—perfect for a relaxed lunch while admiring the turquoise water.

You can also opt to drive a little further to Tolmin, where you’ll find an even wider selection of restaurants and cozy spots to enjoy a great meal.

Afternoon: Waterfalls & Swimming at Sotočje

Braving the cold water at Slap Beri

In the afternoon, head toward Slap Beri or Slap Sopota, two smaller but charming waterfalls near Tolmin. They’re not as dramatic as Boka or Kozjak, but if you love waterfall chasing, they’re worth the detour.

To end the day, go for a swim at Sotočje, the stunning confluence of the Tolminka and Soča Rivers. The water is freezing, but there’s nothing like cooling off in that crystal-blue river surrounded by mountains.

The river is easy accessible for everyone at Camp Labrca

We went camping in Tolmin, right at the river where we had easy access to swimming spots. Even if you are not staying here, the pebbled river beach is a great spot to jump in the amazing water.

Optional Stop: Kanal

Colourful buildings at the charming Kanal.

If you’re spending more time in the Soča Valley, consider visiting Kanal, a quiet town further downstream. Most of the activity happens right at the river, where locals and daredevils jump from the bridge into the emerald water. It’s a fun stop if you’re passing through, though not a must if you’re short on time.

👉 If you are heading or coming from Bohinj or Lake Bled to Soča Valley make sure you take the Vršič and Jesna Lake route. This way you have already done it giving you more time to do more when in Soča Valley area.

Where to stay in Tolmin

📍Budget Hostel Paradiso – located in central Tolmin just minutes from the bus station and grocery shops, with friendly staff, a well-equipped kitchen, and spacious private rooms, making it a convenient choice in an area with few budget accommodations, though the facilities are dated, showers and toilets need repairs, and noise from the bar and building can make sleep difficult.

📍Mid-Range Apartment House Blazar – a peaceful retreat in a charming village near Tolmin, offering spotless, well-equipped apartments with comfortable beds, a full kitchen, and modern amenities, all just a short drive from river activities and local restaurants — the perfect spot to relax, enjoy nature, and explore the stunning Soča Valley with the help of a friendly and attentive host.

📍Luxury Nature View House with Sauna – is a spacious hilltop retreat with stunning views, peaceful surroundings, and every comfort you could need, but what truly makes it special is host Gregor, who goes above and beyond with unique experiences like hiking trails, kayaking, and even paragliding, making it an unforgettable highlight of any stay in the Soča Valley.
