Rent a Boat in Corfu Without License: My Honest Experience
Renting a boat in Corfu without a license was right at the top of my must-do list when planning our short getaway to this stunning Greek island. After skipping it on our trip to Lefkada (still slightly regretting that decision), I was determined not to miss it again.
So… did it live up to expectations?
Absolutely! And more.
Exploring Corfu’s coastline by boat was nothing short of incredible, and easily the highlight of our entire trip. There’s something a little surreal about becoming “the skipper” for a day. If you’re visiting Corfu, I can’t recommend it enough – put renting a boat high on your list.

How I Booked A Boat in Corfu Without A License
Because I didn’t want to miss out on renting a boat during the busiest month in Corfu (August), I reached out to a boat rental company before even arriving on the island.
I was initially tempted to go for Paleokastritsa, since its beaches are some of the most beautiful on Corfu. But while zooming around Google Maps (as one does when planning a holiday a little too seriously), I stumbled across Liapades just one bay over. It looked slightly quieter, which instantly won me over.
That’s how I found Aeolus Boat Rental, who replied the very same day. We sorted everything over WhatsApp; what I wanted, when I wanted it, and all the details in between. Prices were sent straight away, and once I confirmed, that was it.
No upfront payment, just a bit of mutual trust and a “see you there”.
The whole process couldn’t have been easier. We reconfirmed the day before, got exact coordinates for the meeting point, and when we arrived it was simple: pay in cash, leave an ID as a deposit, and off we went. No fuss, no stress, just straight onto the water.
Do You Need A License To Rent A Boat In Corfu?
For smaller boats in Corfu, you do not need a boating license as long as the engine is within the permitted limit (typically up to 30/60 HP, depending on the rental company and local regulations). These boats are usually designed for small groups and can fit around 6 to 8 people.
The minimum age requirement is generally 18 years, although some Corfu boat rental companies may require you to be 21. It’s always best to double-check the specific requirements directly with the rental provider when you contact them.
Navigating a boat is surprisingly easy – it feels a lot like driving a car, even down to the steering wheel.
I’ll admit, I was a bit nervous at first, imagining the anchor getting stuck or drifting too close to shore. But everything went smoothly, and it was much more relaxed than I expected. Plus, the offshore crew is always on standby if you need help, which is reassuring.
If you want a larger or more powerful boat, or if you’re not confident navigating on your own, you will need to rent a boat with a licensed skipper.
How Much Does it Cost to Rent A Boat in Corfu Without a License (2026)?
You might be wondering whether hiring a boat in Corfu is expensive. At first glance, it can seem that way, but remember: you pay for the boat, not per person.
That makes a big difference if you’re traveling as a couple or group. Compared to activities like kayaking, where everyone pays individually, a boat rental can actually be surprisingly good value, especially considering the freedom and experience you get in return.
Expect the following prices (prices differ depending on engine size):
All day (6 hours) 9:00-15:00 or 12:30-18:30: €120 – €170
Half day (3 hours) 9:00-12:00 or 12:30-18:30: €90 – €120
All excluding petrol. We paid 25 euro’s on petrol at the end of the day.
Our Day On A Boat Rental In Corfu
Before hopping onto our very own boat, we got a map showing where we were allowed to go – and, more importantly, where the best beaches were. Priorities.
The morning water was incredibly calm, and with the sun still hiding behind the cliffs, the sea had this unreal milky-blue glow.
We cruised along the coastline towards the south, anchoring wherever it felt right to jump in that ridiculously inviting water, even swimming straight to deserted little beaches.
There’s something pretty special about being in charge of your own boat…
A guide is great for sightseeing, of course, but this was a completely different feeling – being trusted with the boat ourselves made the whole experience feel even more memorable.
As the sun climbed higher, the colors only got better: deeper blues, and in some spots that stunning turquoise-emerald mix that doesn’t quite look real.
Renting a boat in the high-season
There were quite a few boats out, as expected in high season, but it never felt crowded. We just felt lucky drifting past busy beaches like Rovinia and Paleokastritsa, quietly enjoying our own little white-sand corners while everyone else was queueing for paradise.
Hiring a boat in Corfu during July or August is the perfect escape from the crowds. Let’s face it – finding a quiet beach in peak season isn’t always easy.
But out on the water, it’s a different story. We stumbled upon hidden coves and little beaches that felt completely untouched, with some all to ourselves. That’s the magic of exploring Corfu by boat.
We also brought our snorkeling gear, and I’m glad we did. There were plenty of little colourful fish swimming around, showing up as if they’d read the brochure and knew exactly where to be.
It’s not quite the same as snorkeling over vibrant coral reefs, but the crystal-clear water more than makes up for it. The visibility is incredible, making it so much fun to swim underwater and explore what’s beneath the surface.
Tips for Renting A Boat in Corfu
After an incredible day out on the water, here are a few tips to make sure your experience is just as unforgettable (in the good way only).
First things first: pay close attention to the briefing before you head out. You’re only allowed to boat within a specific area. They’ll also give you really helpful advice on timing such as when the wind is expected to pick up, so you can plan your day and avoid any “why is the water suddenly rough?” moments.
You can choose between a half-day (morning or afternoon) or a full day. And yes, a full day sounds like a lot… until you’re out there and suddenly don’t want to leave. The early morning is especially magical – calm, quiet, and that unreal water all to yourself.
It’s the perfect excuse to take it slow, drop the anchor, swim to a deserted beach, and relax knowing your little boat is just a short swim away.
So what should you bring?
Basically everything you’d pack for a perfect beach day: hat, sunscreen, swimwear, snorkel set, water shoes, towels. For us UV shirts are a must – the sun on the water does not play around. (Speaking from experience… let’s just say my bum once resembled a very confident tomato after a snorkeling far too long.)
Food and drinks are just as important. Unless you plan to head back to dock for lunch in Liapades or Paleokastritsa, there aren’t really other options out at sea.
We mostly bought snacks and fruit the day before since we left early and didn’t have time for a bakery stop. But honestly, anything tastes better when you’re floating in front of unreal blue water – even dried crackers or a bag of crisps suddenly feels gourmet.
Is Renting a Boat in Corfu Without A License Worth It?
As you can probably tell, I can’t recommend it enough. Renting a boat was easily one of the absolute highlights of our trip, and honestly, in Greece it almost feels like something you have to do at least once. The Ionian Sea is just unreal.
Whether you’re in Corfu, Lefkada, or Zakynthos, getting out on the water should be at the top of your list. Ideally on a boat you can drive without a licence, because it makes the whole experience feel even more relaxed and accessible. But truly, any time spent on the water here is magical.
And yes… the colour and clarity of that sea really is that good. No filter needed!
